First published in a limited edition of 50 copies from a posthumous transcription of an unrevised typescript by Doubleday, Doran, New York, in 1936. This revised text was first published in Great Britain from a final typescript by Jonathan Cape Ltd in 1955, in two simultaneous editions: an unexpurgated text in a limited edition; and an expurgated version (which reprinted once in the same year). The unexpurgated text was reprinted in 1973 with minor revisions. This Penguin edition follows the 1973 edition. __
