This volume of short stories was originally published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1947 under the title Nineteen Stories. In the present edition, Twenty-one Stories, first published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1954, Mr Graham Greene withdrew two stories, ‘The Lottery Ticket’ and ‘The Other Side of the Border’, and added four stories entitled ‘The Hint of an Explanation’, ‘The Blue Film’,             ‘Special Duties’ and ‘The Destructors’.
